The Dr. Martens started off in 1945 by Dr. Klaus Martens who was a 25 year old German soldier who was injured and had to return to Munich after the second World War. Klaus made an air-cushioned sole that would provide more cushioning and traction to help with his recovery as the generic shoes that were given were not comfortable enough. Using a needle and a salvaged cobbler’s last, Martens fashioned a prototype shoe and thus became the iconic Dr Martens shoe we know and love today.
